Treaty 7-G4-Stoney Nakoda and Tsuut’ina Nations’
Climate Change Leadership Initiative
Abstract
Members of the IPHCPR team supported related work connected to the Treaty 7-G4-Stoney Nakoda and Tsuut’ina Nations’ Climate Change Leadership Initiative. This work contributed to a preliminary recommendations document prepared by the Treaty 7 First Nations Chiefs’ Association, which Stoney Nakoda and Tsuut’ina Nations mandated to support a Nation-led strategy for climate and environmental change.
The work was informed by a two-day community forum held in June 2024, where community leaders, Elders, Knowledge Keepers, technicians, crisis management personnel, environmental experts, and federal representatives shared knowledge and priorities related to climate change, environmental stewardship, Treaty and inherent rights, and Nation-led planning. The preliminary recommendations identify key areas for future climate and environmental action, including Treaty and inherent rights, long-term funding, emergency response, regulatory protections, and Nation-led data infrastructure.
As the full preliminary recommendations document is not currently public, this feature provides a brief overview of the work and shares the cover visual illustrated by artist Simon Payne.
